BIOGRAPHY
My name is Harrison Skinner and I was born in Aberdeen. I originally started my education studying Acting and Performance from a National Certificate Level, I then progressed making my way down to University of The West of Scotland to continue my education and earn my BA, I then moved on and decided to get my BA (HONS) in Professional Theatre Practice.
Originally, I wasn't intending on ever getting an acting education. I originally was wanting to go down the route of studying computing science. I had earned my higher education in computing science and was ready to progress down to North-East Scotland College to explore 3D Computer Animation however, through a moment of realisation I no longer wanted to continue with Computing.
Acting was something that was emotionally dormant inside of me, I had the urge to try it out, but I wasn't courageous enough. It was only when I realised that although I was good at computing science, it was not something I wanted to continue doing, therefore giving me that drive to at least try the course at North-East Scotland College. I will always remember that day I hit the sign-up button, I will always remember the open day and I will always remember my first day, as ultimately these were all new and exciting things but equally as terrifying.
There were never massive signs that I wanted to be an actor, but it didn't mean to say that there weren't small ones. When I was much younger probably around the ages of 7-10, I had my very own "random show". This would consist of quite literally what the title says, something "random". Sometimes it would just be me talking to the camera knowing no one was watching, but that didn't matter, as either way I found an enjoyment in creating these videos.
I was then about 14-16 in which I started my own YouTube Video Gaming Channel, and once again I would narrate what I was doing whilst I would play my games which I think everyone has at least seen once now within their lives.
Fast forward to when I was 17-18 and the dormant urge to become an actor was still there and was only getting stronger. So I decided to have a meeting with one of the drama teachers within my secondary school in which she told me to pursue or at least try something I.E an out of school theatre etc... as unfortunately at that time I was already in my last year at school so it was already too late. Throughout that year I had taken an art class and within that art class, I was given the task of creating a DVD poster, using all but only my materials. It was cowboy themed, so this eventually meant that I had to put on a COWBOY hat and stand outside my school and get photos taken of myself, in costume. There was a great sense of satisfaction when I done this, almost like I could picture myself in the role of the COWBOY. It wasn't just an outfit for me, it was a role. As I was getting my photo taken I found myself doing small things like placing my hands around the belt, and tipping my hat forward, apart from my childhood, this was the first time in a very long time that I somewhat embodied a character.
Having said all that it's now been 5 years since I hit the sign up button, I look back now and think, "wow, imagine if I didn't press that button, where would I be?" - I wouldn't have met my girlfriend, I would be pursuing something I might've not necessarily enjoyed and I'd probably be spending most of my time at home. That button was a lesson for me. To embrace the excitement of life and not fear it, let your instincts guide you on where they TRULY want to go.
