Role
Soldier & Pirate
Dundee & Angus's rendition of Little Match Girl proved to be a challenging piece. I had undergone many devised experiences beforehand but, this was a full class devised experience. I played 2 parts within this piece, a 'Conflicted Soldier' which I personally wrote and a 'Sky Pirate', which I embodied the character name of "The Stone". The rehearsal process consisted of many movement motifs with short improvised dialogue exchange between characters. The performance consisted of minimal set, costume and tech, ultimately meaning that the actors had to perform at their best to ensure that the imagination of the world surrounding the characters was believable.
As previously mentioned I wrote a character backstory for the 'Conflicted Soldier' which I was playing, with photos presented below. The 'Conflicted Soldier' was something I personally enjoyed writing. Although I don't consistently write or make a well committed hobby out of it, whenever given the opportunity to write, I don't back down and usually find it to be extremely enjoyable when I put my mind to it. I also had another character as previously mentioned named 'The Stone', who worked for the 'Sky Pirates'. My work for 'The Stone' involved taking a close look into cartoons and caricature styled work, when exploring this I found this to be laughable, but in a good way. The overall rehearsal experience with this character was fun. 'The Stone' was a stereotypical 'brawler' type character, all strength, no brains. He would do all the heavy lifting for The Pirates. Throughout the experience I got to experiment with a severely disciplined use of stillness which surrounded this character. It was a tough but welcomed challenge as a I learned a lot and ultimately influenced a piece of research a class member conducted working around the use of stillness and silence.
Some of the skills I developed:
Teamwork
Leadership
Multi-Role experience
Caricature character work
Stillness
Character Writing
The overall rehearsal experience was tough, however the end result was well presented and allowed for a lot of character research and analysis of new skills for me to develop as an actor.
